Athyrium ‘Ursula Red’ is an exciting and dramatic fern variety that is an exceptional addition to the garden. With arching triangular leaves marked deep purple at the base and along the stem accompanied by striking silver white tipped pinnules, these deciduous Japanese perennials are sure to add character and interest within the summer garden. Low growing, they reach a mature size of 50cm so are the perfect addition for borders or patio pots. It’s important to note that they will change colour over time, but start off their life cycle in a green shade. In their second year, the leaves become bi-coloured and feature shades of black, purple, pink and even white. 9cm pot plants are supplied.

Planting Notes

Planting – Plant in well dug prepared soil, and add a little manure or organic matter if possible.

Soil Type – Moist fertile soil.

From late autumn protect the crown with a dry mulch e.g.. Straw.

Tolerate all but dry conditions,from a shady border to woodlands

Supplied as a young plant in a 9cm pot, all plants are health checked before sending with a Scottish plant passport. Depending on when in the season you buy, they may be getting ready to flower, in flower, or have passed flowering. If bought in winter the foliage may be dying back, but the plants will re-grow the following season.
Ensure the plant is watered in, and regularly after initial planting until new growth is seen which generally indicates the plant has started to root into the new position.
